Types of Grab Bars
Straight, angled, flip-up, poles, and clamp rails — what each one is for.
There are only a handful of grab bar types worth installing, and the differences between them matter less than where they go and what they are screwed into. Here is what each one is genuinely good for.
Straight bar
The workhorse. Mounts horizontally, vertically, or on a diagonal, in lengths from 12 to 42 inches. Nine out of ten installs use at least one.
Angled bar
Supports a hand through a whole rising motion instead of one fixed height. First choice at a shower entry and beside many toilets.
Flip-up / swing-away
For a toilet with no wall on the useful side. Folds up out of the path, comes down when needed, and can carry a paper holder.
Floor-to-ceiling pole
Support where there is no wall at all — bedside, beside a recliner, next to a tub with a glass surround. Tensioned against structure, not just pressure.
Tub clamp rail
Clamps to the tub wall with no drilling. A reasonable choice in rentals and a poor substitute for a mounted bar anywhere else.
Textured & designer bars
Knurled or peened surfaces for wet hands, and finishes that read as towel bars. Same load rating, different look.
Choosing a length
Longer is not automatically better. A bar should be long enough to catch the hand wherever it lands, short enough to hit two studs cleanly, and placed so nobody has to reach for it.

Diameter, texture, and finish
A bar you cannot grip is not support. The comfortable range for most hands is 1¼ to 1½ inches in diameter, mounted with about 1½ inches of clearance to the wall — enough for fingers to wrap, not so much that an arm can slip through and catch.
Texture matters more than finish. A wet hand slides on polished chrome; knurled, peened, or powder-coated surfaces hold. If someone in the house has arthritis or reduced grip strength, texture is the first thing we recommend and the last thing anyone thinks about at the store.
Stainless steel is the honest default: it does not rust, it takes abuse, and it comes in brushed, polished, white, and bronze. Designer bars that look like towel bars are fine as long as they carry a real load rating — we will tell you which ones do.
How it gets attached — the part that decides everything
The bar is the cheap half of this job. What it is fastened to is the half that matters.

Standard heights we install to
These are the ADA reference dimensions. In a private home they are a starting point, adjusted to the person — someone tall, someone using a wheelchair, or someone who rises mostly with one arm will land outside these numbers, and that is correct.

What not to buy
Suction-cup bars. They are balance aids at best. They release without warning on wet tile, on textured surfaces, and as temperature changes, and we are called out to falls caused by them regularly. If a bar is going to be trusted with body weight, it has to be attached to the building.
Towel bars and shower doors. Neither is rated for load, and both fail suddenly rather than gradually. If someone in the house is already using one to steady themselves, that is the clearest signal that a real bar is overdue.
Anything mounted with plastic anchors. Drywall anchors hold a picture frame. A falling adult applies several hundred pounds of force in an instant, and the anchor pulls a fist-sized hole out of the wall.
