The bathtub, in detail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A standard tub wall is 14 to 16 inches tall and wet. Getting over it requires shifting weight onto one leg while the other crosses a slick edge, which is the single most demanding thing most older adults do in a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The usual answer is two bars, not one. A horizontal bar on the long wall, roughly 33 to 36 inches above the tub floor, is what someone pulls on to rise out of the water. A vertical bar at the faucet end, starting around 32 to 34 inches off the bathroom floor, gives a hand something to hold during the step over. Some homes also take a second angled bar for people who need support through the middle of the motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What we will not do is put a bar where the box photo shows it and hope. Tub surrounds are fiberglass or acrylic over a stud cavity, and the framing rarely lands where the ideal placement is. That gap is what blocking and backing plates exist to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Showers, curbed and walk-in<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Showers look safer than tubs and often are not. The curb is lower, but the floor is smaller, the surfaces are harder, and there is usually nothing to grab once the door closes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An angled bar at the entry supports a hand through a rising motion rather than at one fixed height, which is why it is the most-used bar in most showers. Inside, a horizontal bar within reach of the seat matters more than a long one on the back wall — the reach that counts is the one made while seated and wet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Placement also has to respect the plumbing. We keep bars clear of the valve, the diverter, and the door track, and we check what is behind the wall before drilling so a fastener never finds a supply line.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The toilet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rising from a toilet is a sit-to-stand against gravity from a low seat, usually at night, often half awake. People solve it by pulling on a towel bar, a tank lid, or a sink edge — three things that were never designed to hold a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where there is a wall on the strong side, a horizontal or angled bar there is the cleanest answer. Where there is no wall, a swing-away bar mounted to the floor or to the toilet flange folds up out of the way and comes down when needed. Height is set to the person's legs and grip, not to the number printed on the packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the toilet itself is very low, a comfort-height fixture or a raised seat may do more than any bar. We will tell you that even though it means selling less hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
